On The Press! New Book by Keys Founder – Bob Root

Chemical-Free Skin Health!

Bob announced the beginning of a book focused on skin health over two years ago at the Natural Products Expo West. His book will be published in early October and Bob will officially launch the book at the 2010 California Women’s Conference. Maria Shriver chose Keys Luminos for last years Women’s Conference for the speakers gift bag. This year, she chose Keys Solar Rx for the speakers gift bag.

The book, titled “Chemical-Free Skin Health” with a subtitle of “Stop • Challenge • Choose” will be published by Orion’s M42 publishing company and will be sold on the show floor by Vroman’s bookstore. Bob will be at the show signing the books.

Keys will be exhibiting in the newly created section called the “ECO Island” which features green sustainable products. For those attending, Bob and Wendy will be in the Keys booth along with Kathleen Beaton, Hollywood makeup artist and writer of the Foreword for Bob’s book. Kerry Malouf, motion picture makeup artist and beauty editor for Malibu Magazine will also be in the Keys booth in the ECO Island.

Bob and Wendy will open the ECO Island with a speech on the Mind, Body Soul stage for the conference at the Night at the Village on October 25th. Bob and Wendy will also lead what Maria calls “Kitchen Table” session within the ECO Island. These will be 25 minute Q&A sessions where each will offer information and answer questions.

Bob’s book is an insiders guide to safer cosmetics and skin care. His experience as a formulator of the Keys product lines and not being a trained chemist has given him insights into the why’s of the industry. The book is written to help people that are trying to get more natural in their lives to understand how to make better choices when selecting cosmetics and personal care products. It is a book full of positive intention, but may scare you to find out what chemicals are in your cosmetics and personal care products.

Bob will be also doing a Sprint 4G simulcast from the booth as well as contributing to Maria’s Twitter updates.

Some big surprises coming from the California Women’s Conference, so stay tuned. We will be writing an article on the ECO Island and what it means in the next few weeks. In the interim, check out the conference at http://www.womensconference.org/

Below is the introduction from the book.  Chemical-Free Skin Health  is slated for release in early October.

Introduction…Bob Root

Chemical-Free Skin Health®:  Snapshot

Our skin is our largest and most vulnerable organ.  Love it and it will love you.  Protect it and it will protect you.  Abuse it and it will shorten your life.

There have been more chemicals developed in the last twenty years than in all of mankind.  Of the 20,000 chemicals in use in the cosmetic, personal care and household products industry, less than 1% have been tested for safety.  A few years ago, I read something from the Center for Disease Control that ~63% of Americans claim to have a skin disorder.  A Connection?  Probably!

There are no US Government regulations for skin care or household products.

What I have come to believe is that more than 50% of skin disorders are misdiagnosed and are caused by chemicals in the products we use every day.

An unlikely title?  Not really!  When you read this book, the title will become very appropriate and clear to you.  It is clearly possible to reduce the chemical body burden, but it takes work.

This book is a perspective on the chemical world we live in and why I believe all of us should be concerned for our lives and the lives of our families, friends and the animals that share our lives.  This book is not intended to scare you, although it might.  It is really to draw attention to what our lives have become and the chemicals, companies and products that rule it.

It is about having a choice and making choices that improve our lives.

When I started this book, I felt totally unqualified to write it.  After all, I am not a chemist nor do I fully understand the art and science of chemistry.  I do understand, study and live in the quantum world of small particles, machines and reactions.  I think this gives me a perspective that might just be new and unique.  As I climb to 100,000 feet and look back at the history of chemicals in our lives, I realize how relatively short lived this industry has been operating under the new chemical standards.  It is merely a blip in history.

Even in its short life, concerned people have periodically raised questions about chemicals that are supposed to be safe that turned out to harm us and even harm generations.  Whether it was a pesticide like DDT or a prescription drug called Thalidomide, these chemicals were later found to cause severe harm to humans in one form or the other.

It is also not just about what is wrong.  I am reminded of outliers like Adelle Davis.  Adelle Davis was the author of four bestselling books: “Let’s Cook It Right”, “Let’s Have Healthy Children”, “Let’s Get Well”, and “Let’s Eat Right To Keep Fit”.

Adelle Davis was a visionary born in 1904. When going back through her history it is amazing to realize the impact Adelle had on the most recent and popular diets that are the craze now. Adelle Davis was the pioneer of the nutritional revolution.  Her teachings and writings influenced people striving for health and wellness long before my time.  The point?  We have to look at what we put on our skin both good and bad.  Eliminate some things and add others changing our behavior.

As I began to write, I began to feel a bit more like a reporter.  This then changed quickly to a responsibility to shine a spotlight on what I was seeing as a non-chemist formulator of natural skin care and pet care products.  I felt as if there was no thread or conclusion that I could draw from the book until I had finished it.  This is when the purpose of this book became clear to me.

Simply put, whether you read past this introduction or not, the one thing that you should glean from it is that we as individuals are responsible for our own lives.  This includes what we put on to and in our bodies or what we choose to be exposed to in the environments in which we live.  Take charge of your life is the message.  If you choose to trust that the government will protect you, that a doctor will cure you or one of those activists will shed light on what is wrong in our world, you are naive at best.

Sorry if I shock you.  I merely want to open all of our eyes that there is no free lunch, nothing that is harmless and that one creature poison is another medicine.  It is finding out what is right for you in your life.  Today there is no excuse with more and more knowledge at our fingertips.

Every day through the eyes of my customers, I meet people that have had a life-threatening event that wakes them up to take charge of their lives.  Story after story of wins and losses of life bring tears of pain and tears of joy.  Therefore, I hope this book will help to open your eyes to take charge of what you are exposed to everyday.  I ask you to Stop, Challenge and Choose everything that you hear when it comes to products that you put in and on your body.  There is no singular Truth only what is true today.  Tomorrow will be different.  For that, I am sure.

I have been in the personal care industry for only six years, but as a student of science, I offer my opinion of what I see.  These forces of good and bad are truly the basis of a chemical war.

It is about choices!
